See San Antonio: Natural Bridge Caverns

November 14, 2014 Leave a comment dridrive

Fans of the outdoors won’t want to miss the adventure of San Antonio’s Natural Bridge Caverns — home of the Bracken Bat Cave, the largest colony of Mexican free-tailed bats in the world!

The caverns offer several amazing tours that can from 30 minutes to six hours (so you may want to add an extra day to your trip).

On the Discovery Tour, you’ll travel through a half-mile of the largest show-cavern in Texas, 180 feet below ground! Or take the Hidden Passages Tour, where the lights go out and you can experience total darkness.

If you’d rather go up, the Canopy Challenge provides a four-tier adventure course, complete with zip lines!

Sadly, to experience the Bracken Bat Flight, where as many as 20 million bats take to the skies to feed their young, you’d have to visit San Antonio in early June. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of conservationists and the city, the cave is protected from commercial development (an announcement made on Halloween, appropriately enough). But if you’d like an idea what it’s like to watch, check out this video:
