Ransomware: 75% of the Healthcare Industry Targeted?
Did you think February’s ransomware attack on a California hospital was an isolated incident? Think again. According to a recent poll, as many as 75% of U.S. healthcare facilities may have been targets in the past year.
The survey, conducted by Healthcare IT News and HIMSS Analytics, found that over half the facilities polled said they had been involved in a ransomware attack, while another 25% were either unsure or have no way of knowing whether they were the subject of an attack.
They may be numerous, but very few attacks have actually been successful – which is why they rarely make the news.
One positive note: 73% of the health systems surveyed said they have a business continuity plan in place and are potentially prepared to address an attack. On the other hand, almost half said they were unsure if they would pay a ransom – since the decision would be determined by multiple factors, such as the scale of the attack, how quickly it was detected, and when data had last been backed up.
The rise in ransomware is just one more reason organizations need to take business continuity seriously. DRI’s Healthcare Continuity course teaches healthcare organizations how to develop a comprehensive business continuity program that helps employees and patients by protecting service delivery and data availability when they’re needed most. The course covers business continuity best practices for the healthcare field, with a curriculum that reflects the NFPA 1600, Joint Commission, HIPAA, and other vital laws, regulations, and standards. The course is designed to give students the tools they need to pass the Healthcare Examination and continue on the path toward becoming a DRI Certified Healthcare Provider Continuity Professional (CHPCP) or Associate Healthcare Provider Continuity Professional (AHPCP).
