Catastrophe Recap: Here Come the Floods

July 14, 2016 Leave a comment dridrive

CautionFlooding was the major theme of the most recent Global Catastrophe Recap, as China, the Netherlands, and the eastern U.S. dealt with the heavy storms and severe weather throughout the month of June.

Among the major incidents of the month:

  • China dealt with several rounds of flooding due to seasonal “Mei-Yu” monsoon rainfall, damaging 200,000 homes and costing upwards of $4.4 billion USD in the agricultural sector
  • Hail, wind, and flash flooding swept through the Netherlands, causing damage in South Holland and Utrecht provinces listed at $578 million USD
  • Catastrophic flooding hit West Virginia, damaging or destroying as many as 5,500 homes and 125 businesses as a federal disaster declaration was issued
  • Hail and straight-line winds were active throughout the month, causing thunderstorm damage from the Rockies to the Mid-Atlantic – however, June actually saw the lowest number of tornadoes for that month since 1988, and
  • Near-record heat, continuing drought conditions, and gusty winds created perfect wildfire conditions for southern California. The Erskine Fire damaged or destroyed at least 298 buildings.
