Mac Users Beware: Malware is Finally Coming For You

September 8, 2017 Leave a comment DRI Admin

For years, a point of pride for Apple users was the Mac’s resistance to malware, but sadly, those days are over. According to recent data, there has been a 220% increase in Mac malware over the last year!

Historically, Windows has been the easier operating system to infect with malware, but in recent years, Apple has made it too easy to digitally “sign” malware to get past the macOS Gatekeeper software, and the XProtect antivirus software built into Macs isn’t strong enough protection.

The usual culprit: adware and browser hijackers (AKA potentially unwanted programs or PUPs), which are distributed by legitimate companies and would open Apple up to lawsuits if it tried to intervene. These are different from the malware like spyware, keyloggers and other malicious attacks that plague Windows users.

But as the Malwarebytes report indicates, heavier attacks – such as ProtonRAT, which infected many Mac experts – are sure to come down the line. The recommendation to deal with both the current wave of approved adware/PUPs and worse attacks to come: third-party antivirus software.

Windows users with cybersecurity experience may have some recommendations.
