The World Economic Forum’s latest Global Risks Report once again highlights the ongoing need to address climate change, resource scarcity and other long-term concerns. But in the short-term, social issues like livelihood and mental health could have major impacts as well.
The
17th Annual GRR is designed to get leaders thinking beyond quarterly reports and develop policies that address long-term risks that will surely shape their goals down the road, whether it’s right now or in 10 years. It divides these emerging risks into five categories: economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal, and technological.
In the short term (0-2 years), the top risks are evenly spaced among the categories:
- Extreme weather
- Livelihood crises
- Climate action failure
- Social cohesion erosion
- Infectious diseases
- Mental health deterioration
- Cybersecurity failure
- Debt crises
- Digital inequality
- Asset bubble burst
But in the long term (over the next 5-10 years), environmental issues make up half of the top risks:
- Climate action failure
- Extreme weather
- Biodiversity loss
- Natural resource crises
- Human environmental damage
- Social cohesion erosion
- Involuntary migration
- Adverse tech advances
- Geo-economic confrontation
- Geopolitical resource contestation
