2023 Predictions: Will North Korea’s Missile Tests Go Too Far?

January 17, 2023 Leave a comment DRI Admin

The DRI International Future Vision Committee has released its 8th Annual Predictions Report, looking ahead to 2022 and its impact on the resilience community. Download the complete report free from the DRI Library, and read on for a prediction on North Korea and tensions in the Pacific.

Prediction 7: North Korea will come very close to hitting a part of Japan during a missile test.

North Korea comes close to hitting Japanese territory with one of its missiles, probably inadvertently. There will be no casualties or damage to infrastructure, but there will be a sharp rise in tensions in the Pacific. Japan and South Korea will respond with strong rhetoric and international diplomacy rather than force but will look to the U.S. for support and appropriate action. The unknown element here is whether such an incident will cause Beijing and Washington to unite in an effort to rein in Pyongyang or whether China will see this as opportunity to assert itself independently. In either case, the incident will deeply concern markets and further speed up moves to make supply chains less dependent on Asia.

Join us for DRI2023 in Austin, TX, Feb. 26 – Mar. 1, 2023, where Future Vision Committee Chair Lyndon Bird will lead an interactive session where participants will have the opportunity to vote on a number of the key issues which have emerged from the reports. Bird will respond to voting as it happens, providing instant feedback and opinion. Please come to this session ready to participate, debate, and even argue if you wish. Challenging and controversial opinions are welcome.
