Typhoon Mangkhut Worst Storm of 2018 So Far: Death and Destruction in the Philippines and China
The Philippines, the southern China coast and Hong Kong were battered over Sept. 14-16 by Typhoon Mangkhut, which has been dubbed the most intense storm of the year. And while the storm itself has subsided, the death and destruction is still being calculated.
In the Philippines, the storm fiercely struck the island of Luzon, killing at least 81 people. In the aftermath, both heavy destruction and mudslights have caused further death and destruction. While the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration upgraded its own alert system to a rare Signal 4, there was even concern that it would reach the heretofore unused Signal 5, which was added after the destruction caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Then, with the reported strength of a Category 5 hurricane, Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong on Sunday Sept. 16, prompting the Hong Kong Observatory to rate it a 10 on its 1-10 storm scale. Winds reached 109 mph in the city, while waves offshore reached up to 45 feet, the highest level since at least 1904.
Most alarming was how the modern high-rise buildings of the city handled the storm. While they’re designed to sway wind and reduce tension, that doesn’t protect the glass, which caused a domino of shattering, sending the shards hurling through city streets, as captured on video.
