A Perfect Storm of Resilience Threats is Coming for Perfume Makers

July 14, 2025 Leave a comment DRI Admin

Supply chain, climate change, global trade, and logistics issues have impacted manufacturing and production in nearly all aspects of daily life. But challenges to one area have been quietly going unnoticed – fragrances.

Specifically, patchouli.

More than 80% of Pogostemon cablin – the minty plant from which patchouli oil is derived – is farmed in Indonesia. On the best of days, it’s a time-intensive process, and as a result it is a highly sought-after ingredient for perfume manufacturing and other scent-related markets.

But a variety of risks that resilience professionals are familiar with are hitting the patchouli supply hard. Extreme weather and heavy deforestation have combined to create landslides that ruin plantations, which the unpredictability of global markets makes it less lucrative for farmers to cultivate the plants, leading to supply shortages.

As a consequence, companies are attempting to be transparent with consumers as they attempt creative solutions.

“Patchouli essential oil is one of the few natural oils we use instead of a synthetic fragrance oil,” wrote Canadian company Flore Incense. “We have been testing a synthetic patchouli fragrance oil as a backup plan, but even that’s in limited supply.”

“We are currently experiencing a shortage of patchouli essential oil due to a crop shortfall,” Indigo Wild’s customer service wrote to a customer. “We understand how much you love this scent, and are actively working with our suppliers to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we hope you’ll give our other aromatic blends a try.”

It’s another lesson in the growing need for alternative supply lines and backup manufacturing plans during these uncertain times.

(Even if you don’t care about perfume, you’re still not safe – we’ve got some bad news about the threat to beer, too.)
