Catastrophe Recap: El Niño Brings Storms, Flooding Worldwide

el ninoEl Niño enhanced rainfall led to major flooding across sections of South America, while rain and windstorms pummeled the United Kingdom and flooded the United States in December, according to the latest Global Catastrophe Recap.

The report, which evaluates the impact of natural disasters occurring worldwide, highlighted several recent events:

  • Following prolonged periods of El Niño-enhanced rainfall, parts of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil saw some of the worst floods in at least 50 years – river flooding and landslides caused the loss of 16 lives and tens of thousands of homes, and an estimated $200 million USD in economic losses.
  • A series of North Atlantic storm systems caused extensive flooding and wind damage throughout the UK and Ireland, with a large portion of southern Scotland, northern England, and Wales being hit hardest.
  • In the U.S., a complex weather pattern including violent tornadoes, historic flooding, record snowfall, hail, and damaging winds ravaged parts of the country. At least 58 tornadoes touched down, , flooding in the Mississippi Valley and Midwest saw rivers cresting at or above previous historic heights, and record snowfall and ice disrupted travel – at least 64 people were killed, and total economic losses may exceed $4 billion USD.
