Amazon’s Worldwide Web Outage: What Happened?

October 24, 2025 Leave a comment DRI Admin

October 20 saw global chaos online, as Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud storage platform that hosts thousands of apps and websites, was down for hours. In that time, online activities around the world were unavailable, shining a light on just how vulnerable our interconnected technologies are.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, Amazon released a statement on the cause of the outage. Customers were unable to connect to DynamoDB, the system where data is stored, due to a “latent defect” within its management system. This system houses hundreds of thousands of DNS (domain name system) records.

Because of a bug in the Virginia-based US-East-1 datacenter region that failed to repair itself, a manual fix was needed, requiring the system to be shut down for hours. In the meantime, more than 8 million outages were reported.

This included banking sites, chat forums, ring cameras, and even a bed – Eight Sleep, an internet-enabled “smart bed,” received complaints from users who couldn’t adjust their bed’s position or temperature because it could not connect to the controller app on their phones.

While AWS services were generally restored by the end of the day, it was a potent reminder – and a timely one, considering October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month – for the resilience profession of how quickly a single point of failure can lead to cascading effects in ways that aren’t always easy to prepare for.
